Serena W.Y. Chong joined OWW as Senior CSR Analyst in January 2009. She holds an MSc (Merit) in Development Studies, from the Development Studies Institute (DESTIN) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and BSc (Hons) Economics and Politics from the University of Bath, UK. Her Masters research thesis covered the sustainability of antiretrovirals provisioning in the context of the Swaziland health system. During her time at the LSE, she focused on the economics and politics of African development, public health and infectious diseases. Her first degree thesis was written on the topic of ethnic inequalities and wealth distribution in Malaysia. Most recently she designed and produced a series of thematic documents in Chinese for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), covering issues relating to climate change and the Bali Action Plan, published for the 14th Conference of the Parties (Poznan) in December 2008. Serena previously held the role of Policy & Communications Officer with a women's rights NGO based in Dakar, Senegal, working on research and advocacy programs for gender equality and women’s rights across Africa, particularly in the context of achieving the Millennium Development Goals. She also interned with the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP), New York, evaluating the operational performance of several international development projects implemented by UN agencies in partnership with NGOs, government agencies and the private sector, all of which were funded by the UN Foundation through UNFIP. She also worked with a farming community in eastern Uganda to set up a store for trading cash crops, and helped facilitate grassroots-level agricultural training sessions and HIV/AIDS sensitisation activities. Serena has also worked in the private sector, spending a year with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London, where she was an assurance associate with a portfolio of technology, energy and media clients. |
